Jean Vigo died very young and only made two shorter films, À propos de Nice (1930) , Zéro de conduite (1933) and this, his only feature. Initially, L'Atlante was considered a flop, and Vigo passed as the film was being completed. In the ensuuing years, L'Atlante has taken its place among the greatest films of all time. Vigo took this otherwise simple tale of young newlyweds honeymooning on the barge, L'Atlante and infused it with a dreamy, romantic quality which revealed his mastery of cinematic language. Strange, slow and beautiful.
